Running Two Routers

Post by Thursday on Fri Jul 03, 2009 10:16 am

Guten Morgen Ladies and Gents. I have a few questions for the networking savy as I am not so much.
Ok so we have 2 routers. One is a Netgear WGT624v4 and one is a Linksys WRT54 wireless router. The Linksys is several years old, we have had it since we got a cable modem almost 6 or so years ago. The Netgear is new and I love it I set up WAP2 protection with a 24 character pw, got an open NAT on xbox live. Everything was going great until my brother decided that the Linksys was better and hooked it up. He's dumb. He also says "there is no reason to have a secured wireless connection where we live, who is going to drive out here to steal our internet." Ok so from what you just said I could go off and say we don't need police, fire dpt, or electricians out here since things that require them are very very rare. Mind you we live in Durham County so it's a nice little neighborhood.

Ok the reason I started this is one so I could rant about how nieve and uneducated he is about this sort of thing.(and he is at NC State for Bio-Medical Engineering....) secondly I need some help. The Netgear gives me the best performance through wire, on Xboxlive, and wireless+protection. But on the other hand he has a thinkpad running vista and he can connect for about 5min then it shuts him out while everyone of us running XP can stay connected through wireless. I'm guessing this is an issue with VISTA! :angry FUCK.

But anyways so I can have my open NAT and the router that I believe preforms better and at the same time have my brother able to connect wirelessly(although let me mind you he sits in one place playing World of Warcraft all fucking day so he could just plug the cable in the back of the desktop into the laptop... once again him being difficult) I have set out to find more information about hooking two routers up to a modem.

I was thinking if at all possible hook the netgear up to the modem directly then run another cable to the linksys and use that as an accespoint for his computer. Sort of like Modem->Netgear->Linksys. (<-click link)

I will keep searching the googlenets, but if anyone with any networking knowledge could chime in and give me some suggestion it would be greatly appreciated.

oh and
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD MORNING KHAOS! :YEAH

Well, I can't be of any help but I'll leave you with a few wise words.

1.Vista sucks fucking donkey balls.
2. You brother should prefer a wired connection since it's typically more stable and faster. Hell, my PS3 is not 3 feet from my router but I'm still running a wired connection. I noticed I was downloading shit off the PlayStation Store alot quicker with a wired connection.

And last but certainly not least, is this you brother?

Well I finally got everything hooked up and running. It took some time but everything seems to have gone pretty smoothly.
